This month, Bubble Wrap turns 50.  According to a write-up by AP’s David Porter in a Manufacturing.Net, in the late 50s, Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding were approached by a New York City designer to create textured wallpaper.  It was a flight into Newark Airport that triggered the “bubble wrap” moment, as Fielding noticed how the fluffy clouds seemed to cushion the plane’s descent. The rest, as they say, is history.

appreciation-day

Manufactured by the Sealed Air Corporation, Bubble Wrap has quite a following — mostly for the popping sound it makes when being destroyed. Many consider it a stress reducer. It is so popular that there are more than 250 Facebook pages devoted to Bubble Wrap.

There are quite a few game apps that found inspiration from Bubble Wrap. In the MobiHand catalog, there are four dozen bubble-related apps, such as:

BubbleBust

Bubble Bust – Virtual Bubble Wrap Popping Game! – Lots of Fun! v1.7.0 by Cleric Software Solutions, LLC.  This $2.99 app is designed for BlackBerry Storm or BlackBerry Storm 2.  For the Curve and Pearl, there’s Bubble Popper FREE GAME v1.0 by AIM Productions which has a FREE and a paid version.  Another BlackBerry Storm/Storm 2 option is Bubble Wrap v2.2.1 by Leetcom. It runs $1.99.

BubbleThriller

Bubble Thriller

For Windows Mobile Pocket PC, there is an arcade game called Bubble Thriller v1.02 by Absolutist Ltd, where you pop color bubbles for points. It runs $12.50.

BubbletAndroid

Bubblet for Android

On the Android platform, there’s Bubblet v1.1.3 by Mesa Science & Technology, LLC.  This port of Bubble Breaker of Windows Mobile offers a gameboard with differently-colored balls arranged in a matrix. There are five different colors: red, blue, green, yellow and grey. The player clicks on any two similarly-colored balls to eliminate them from the matrix, earning an appropriate amount of points in the process. The more balls eliminated at once, the higher the points added to the player’’s score. It sells for $4.95.

So why not take time and celebrate the birth of Bubble Wrap with a fine new bubble app?

According to research from comScore and Compete, awareness of the Android mobile operating system is rising.

DroidDoesNov

“comScore found that 37% of US mobile users had heard of Android in November 2009. This was up from 22% as recently as August, likely due to the Verizon Droid ad campaign. And 17% of mobile users in the market for a new smartphone in the next three months planned to buy an Android phone, compared with 20% who would pick up an iPhone.”

It was also noted that usage patterns for Android and iPhone owners were very similar:

  • There was a notable gap in e-mail usage, with Android users far behind iPhone owners
  • Mobile media consumption and browser and app usage tracked very closely.
