This month, Bubble Wrap turns 50. According to a write-up by AP’s David Porter in a Manufacturing.Net, in the late 50s, Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding were approached by a New York City designer to create textured wallpaper. It was a flight into Newark Airport that triggered the “bubble wrap” moment, as Fielding noticed how the fluffy clouds seemed to cushion the plane’s descent. The rest, as they say, is history.
Manufactured by the Sealed Air Corporation, Bubble Wrap has quite a following — mostly for the popping sound it makes when being destroyed. Many consider it a stress reducer. It is so popular that there are more than 250 Facebook pages devoted to Bubble Wrap.
There are quite a few game apps that found inspiration from Bubble Wrap. In the MobiHand catalog, there are four dozen bubble-related apps, such as:
On the Android platform, there’sBubblet v1.1.3 by Mesa Science & Technology, LLC. This port of Bubble Breaker of Windows Mobile offers a gameboard with differently-colored balls arranged in a matrix. There are five different colors: red, blue, green, yellow and grey. The player clicks on any two similarly-colored balls to eliminate them from the matrix, earning an appropriate amount of points in the process. The more balls eliminated at once, the higher the points added to the player’’s score. It sells for $4.95.
So why not take time and celebrate the birth of Bubble Wrap with a fine new bubble app?
