Motorola has just unveiled the first of a new generation of Android-based smartphones. Called the CLIQ, is seems to be aimed at young people obsessed with social networks. As reported by Saul Hansell of The New York Times, “Instead of the traditional menu of features, the CLIQ’s home screen is an ever-changing mosaic of e-mail, Twitter tweets and status updates, superimposed over photos of the people sending those messages.”
The CLIQ will be available through T-Mobile in the United States in the fall. Though no price was announced, analysts expect it to be in the $100 range.
The phone has a 3.1-inch touch screen and a slide-out keyboard. Motorola is expected to introduce a second, more expensive smartphone in a few weeks that will work on the Verizon network.

“It’s alive,” said Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha during a press event Thursday. “Think of it like the text bubbles in cartoons, with new information pushed to you all the time.”
Layered on top of the Android operating system is Motorola’s proprietary Internet service called MOTOBLUR which centralizes and streamlines all of a user’s social networking and messaging contacts and communications in a user-friendly interface. In addition to MOTOBLUR, the CLIQ boasts one-touch access to Google mobile services including Google Search by voice, Google Maps with Street View, YouTube and Picasa.
Along with its 3.1-inch HVGA touch-screen display, the CLIQ features a 5 megapixel auto focus camera with video capture and playback at 24 frames per second, a 3.5mm headset jack, and music player with pre-loaded Amazon MP3 store application, Shazam and iMeem Mobile.
