Smartphones are hot and the mobile content that runs on them (i.e. apps, music downloads, podcasts, RSS feeds, video, wallpaper, and ringtones) is even hotter with new additions springing up daily. Wouldn’t it be awesome if there were an assistant for your smartphone that could screen mobile content and recommend to you which ones you should pay attention to? That’s the idea behind the FREE SIDEBAR appthat is currently available for the Android platform with plans on rolling out for BlackBerry devices, the iPhone, and Windows Mobile smartphones.
In brief, SIDEBAR (www.sidebar.com) is a personal content recommendation and delivery engine that makes it easy for you to discover, access, and share “fun stuff.”
It utilizes a patent pending, highly attuned optimization engine that gets smarter the more you use it.
The company recently completed a highly successful consumer trial conducted with a Tier 1 carrier that validated Sidebar’s appeal and ability to stimulate content consumption and engagement. The trial included 5,000 smartphone users and, in a survey taken after its completion, they gave SIDEBAR high marks for being “easy to use” and “a fun way to get information.” Nearly half of the surveyed active users expressed that they were more likely to consume mobile content as a result of their use of SIDEBAR and 20 percent said that they shared, bought or downloaded a product or service that they discovered in SIDEBAR.
Advanced Device Locks (ADL) allows you to lock your BlackBerry or selected applications only such as Messages, Pictures, Contacts, Video, etc. to prevent them from unsolicited access.

MobiHand president and CEO, Steve Howard, was quoted in a Wired.com story (Research In Motion Woos BlackBerry Developers by Priya Ganapati) appearing in the Gadget Lab section of the website. He was asked to comment on some of the announcements that were made at the BlackBerry Developer Conference that’s taking place in San Francisco this week.
The announcements probably aren’t enough to help RIM steal developers away from rival operating systems but could put the BlackBerry on a more equal footing, experts contacted by Wired.com say.
“All these things are just a matter of getting to parity,” says Steve Howard, president and CEO of MobiHand, an operator of app stores for smartphones. “They are not dramatically leapfrogging anyone else on the platform side but they are creating a more creative environment for BlackBerry developers.”
When asked about Adobe partnering with RIM which will allow application developers to use Flash platform technology and other Adobe tools such as PhotoShop to create apps for BlackBerry devices, Howard said “It’s a competitive blast at Apple. There are a huge number of developers qualified to develop in Flash and tightly integrating Flash with the BlackBerry environment injects energy into the BlackBerry platform.”
To coincide with the grand opening of the BlackBerry Theme Store, we are doing a series of stories on theme developers. Today’s is about BlackBerry Boutique and its founder, Michelle.
BlackBerry Boutique has several dozen themes in the MobiHand catalog. Her newest one is GlamBerry. Michelle remarked, “I was first inspired by the name ‘GlamBerry,’ and imagined it as a boutique-ish style theme. After all, when you think of shopping and boutiques, you think pink and black, stripes and polkadots. Put it all together and you have a glamorous BlackBerry!”
